Speech Outline In this unit we will review topics covered in the prior unit and enhance them with an assessment of spoken language skills. Students will identify the structures and skills of speech and use of language in their daily lives. Students will review and demonstrate fluency and accuracy of vocabulary and syntax. Students will be able to demonstrate appropriate intonation for spoken language. As in the prior unit, students will also have the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to transfer and generalize verbal and nonverbal materials from one context to another. First, students will use speech to introduce, maintain and shift topic. Next, they will discuss and express ideas about the topic. Finally, students will analyze the form and function of speech. Students will practice and demonstrate active listening skills. Students will be able to independently determine that a presentation has a purpose and audience. Students will be able to determine which graphic elements help to present information. Students will be able to determine when and how they should use speech in a text to communicate effectively. Students will be able to identify the main idea of a short story and understand the main idea of a nonfiction passage. Students will identify the most important details of a short story and nonfiction passage. Students will discuss an opinion, find and develop one of their own. Students will be able to explain the rationale for their own opinion. Students will explain a character in a story and compare and contrast two or more characters in a story. Students will demonstrate empathy when assessing the effects of an action on others and themselves. Students will describe and evaluate a television program based on content, audience appeal, production values, and craft. Students will utilize both spoken and written language to answer the questions given on a multiple-choice test. Students will demonstrate their ability to use appropriate English pronunciation when answering the multiple-choice test. Students will be able to identify and record the name and date of a painting, and learn more about the artist’s life. Students will recognize that a mural has a purpose and audience. Students will analyze the artist’s training and the meaning of the subject matter of a mural. Students will compare and contrast two murals by the same artist. Students will identify and define the vocabulary in a short story. Students will describe a product in a way that will help them purchase it. Students will tell the difference between the main characters and secondary characters in a story. Students will describe the story’s settings, characters and plot. Students will recognize and produce emotional effects of the character’s actions in a story
